Start with Taste 117's sipping chocolate in Provo; for a family, pick Brooker's: 13 drinking chocolate flavors, with shops in Provo, Vineyard, Lehi and Spanish Fork. The first three places below are the ones whose own menus say chocolate is in the cup. The other five list the drink without saying what is in it, so ask before you order.
Taste 117 at 117 N University Ave makes its own chocolate from cacao beans. For a thick cup, order the sipping chocolate: the menu calls it a thick European-style drink made from that chocolate, topped with whipped cream. The regular hot chocolate is the second option, made with Taste's chocolate, French cocoa powder and whole milk, with a dairy-free choice.
Brooker's lists 13 drinking chocolates named for the original colonies, made from chocolate rather than the cocoa powder behind modern American hot chocolate. Order Virginia for semi-sweet chocolate made to Thomas Jefferson's recipe, Pennsylvania for rich chocolate, or Massachusetts for milk chocolate. Kids can each pick a different flavor: New Jersey is s'mores, Delaware is peanut butter and chocolate, and North Carolina is cookies n' creme.
Guayoyo's menu describes its hot chocolate as made with chocolate and creamy milk, topped with a touch of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. The Venezuelan-inspired cafe is at 19 S Main St in Pleasant Grove and takes online orders.
The Main St menu lists a Hot Chocolate with an option called Kid Temp. The ordering page does not explain it, so ask when you pick up. You can add up to three flavors, such as toasted marshmallow or salted caramel, and the same non-coffee list has Frozen Cocoa and Chocolate Milk. The shop is at 184 Main St, and online orders are pickup only.
Pueblo Coffee, at 388 N Main St, lists a Mexican Hot Chocolate next to a regular Hot Chocolate. The kids menu has a PB&J, grilled cheese, mini pancake meal and quesadilla.
Peace on Earth, at 35 N 300 W, lists hot chocolate on its menu, along with alternative milks and homemade syrups. The menu also lists spirits for guests 21 and older, and the food menu says everything is made to order.
The Creamery on Ninth, 1209 N 900 E, lists a Hot Chocolate Float on its ice cream menu. The page gives no description of it, so ask what goes in it. The grill sells kid's meals that include a kid's entree, side, small drink and a kid's scoop of ice cream.
Sodalicious has a Hot Chocolate section on its drink menu. Its Provo shop at 3376 N University Ave and its Orem shop at 1534 S State St both list drive-thru hours, and the Orem State St location lists its lobby as closed.
For an adult who wants chocolate made in house, go to Taste 117, where the menu lists thick European-style sipping chocolate made with chocolate Taste makes itself. For kids who each want something different, go to Brooker's, whose flavor list includes s'mores, peanut butter, cookies n' creme and white chocolate with peppermint. Sinners & Saints in Lehi lists a Kid Temp option on its hot chocolate. For a meal with the cup, Pueblo in Springville, Peace on Earth in Provo and the Creamery in Provo all list kids menus.
By address: Taste 117 is at 117 N University Ave and Peace on Earth at 35 N 300 W, both in Provo. Brooker's is at 748 E 820 N and the Creamery at 1209 N 900 E, both in Provo. Guayoyo is at 19 S Main St in Pleasant Grove, Pueblo at 388 N Main St in Springville, Sinners & Saints at 184 Main St in Lehi. Brooker's has more shops in Vineyard, Lehi and Spanish Fork, and Sodalicious has shops in Orem and Pleasant Grove too.
