For escape rooms in Provo, start with the three on University Avenue downtown: Get Out Games, The Escape Key and the Provo City Library. Orem has Red Giant and Escapes in Time, and Lindon, Pleasant Grove and Payson each have one.
Egyptian Tomb is the one to start with: a dim pharaoh's tomb solved against an hourglass in an hour. The other five rooms are The Heist, Reactor Meltdown, Getout Spaceflight, Space 2, which the venue bills as much harder than its first space room, and Zombie On A Chain. Street parking runs along the front and north side of the building, with a few spots in back.
Three rooms: The Lair of Lunacy, CSI Provo and Infiltrated. CSI Provo is the pick for a family crime-solving night. The venue calls all three kid friendly but says one is a scary room without naming it, so ask which when you text 385-236-3409.
Prankster, rated low difficulty, is the library's room for grade-schoolers, and games run 30 minutes to an hour. Its other rooms are Sherlock Holmes, School of Magic and Escape the 80s, rated from high difficulty down to medium-low.
Six rooms: Orion-V, Excalibur, Ministry of Magic, Neverland, Addams Mansion and Xenomorph XL. Excalibur has a live actor, and Red Giant tags it first-timer friendly and family friendly, along with Orion-V. Neverland is also family friendly but is its hardest room, and a youth group or reunion can book several rooms at the same start time, up to 60 people at once.
Moriarty's Mishaps has the family helping Sherlock Holmes take down a criminal mastermind, and the venue rates it 2 out of 5 for difficulty. Lancelot's Legacy, Pandora's Parlour, Jailbreak at the OK Corral and Crazy Hoarder's Attic make five rooms in all. For a birthday or a larger group, email [email protected] to set up a special booking.
In Lindon, Alcatraz rates its four rooms one to four ghosts for spookiness: Enchanter's Curse (one), The Row (two), Zombie Fallout (three) and Chloe (four). Enchanter's Curse sends players through a castle under attack by sorcerers to find five artifacts in an hour; Alcatraz rates it moderate, and about 60 percent of groups get out. Staff can route guests around its crawl spaces.
The Sweet Escape builds taste and smell into the puzzles, and the owners say it suits kids. The other five rooms are Showtime Magic, Kraken Casino, Tick Tock's Circus, The Escape Motel and Christmas Catastrophe. Each game allows 60 minutes, and staff watch on camera and send in a clue when you ask.
Three bookable rooms: Butch Cassidy's Great Escape Part 1 and Part 2, and Tesla's Laboratory Disaster, while the ILLUMIN8 room is closed for a rebuild. Butch Cassidy runs as a two-part story, and each room is an hour of play.
Start with the youngest player. With kids under 12, look at the library's Prankster room, The Sweet Escape in Pleasant Grove and Escapes in Time in Orem. If a toddler has to come along, The Escape Key in downtown Provo is the place to look. Get Out Games fits teens best unless you book the whole room.
Then pick by the drive. Families in Lehi and American Fork are closest to Alcatraz in Lindon and The Escape Date in Pleasant Grove. Spanish Fork, Salem and Payson families are closest to Winchester Escape House. Provo and Orem families have five venues between University Avenue and State Street.
Last, count heads. A couple or a family of three fits The Escape Date. A youth group of 30 fits Red Giant, which can run several rooms at the same time.
