If you only try one burger place in Provo, make it JCW's at 396 W 2230 N. Every beef burger is a third-pound charbroiled chuck patty, the Crippler stacks three for a full pound, and the kids meals include a Jr. Burger, so one order covers a table of mixed ages. For smashed wagyu, go to Provo Burger on Canyon Road. For pastrami piled on a burger, go to Burgers Supreme. For a sit-down dinner, book Black Sheep Cafe for a bison burger. With younger kids, go to CHOM downtown for its Kids Burger Meal.
JCW's Provo shop on 2230 North charbroils every beef burger on a third-pound chuck patty, so you choose by stack: the Big "C" Cheeseburger has two patties and the Crippler three. A table of mixed appetites can order here: the kids meals come with fries and a drink, and the Garden Swiss Burger is a veggie patty.
This shop on Canyon Road builds its burger one way: smashed local wagyu, stacked one, two or three patties high with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, tamed jalapenos and secret sauce. A group that agrees on burgers has an easy time here, since the order is a size plus a shake, and a Bucket of Fries feeds up to six.
Burgers Supreme has been family owned in Provo since 1989 and calls itself up-scale fast food, with meat delivered each morning and meals made to order. Its Pastrami Burger piles pastrami, lettuce, tomato, onion and house-made fry sauce on a quarter-pound patty. The menu also has gyros, fish and steak dinners, so a group that is not all eating beef can still share a table.
CHOM on 300 North has eight beef burgers, all quarter-pound patties except the smaller Lil Chom. The Garlic puts Swiss, a fried egg, garlic aioli and shoestring potatoes on the patty, and the fries come dusted in CHOM's own fry spice. For a picky eater, the Kids Burger Meal comes plain or CHOM-style, and there is a Beyond Meat Vegan Burger.
Backdoor BRGR is the restaurant inside Heber Hatchets, the axe-throwing hall on University Avenue, and it is family owned, formerly Joe's Gourmet Grill. The Dan Kelly is a half-pound patty with cheese, bacon, peanut butter, raspberry pepper jelly and sweet jalapeno spread. Book it for a birthday group or a table of adults who want a reserved seat, not a counter.
Black Sheep Cafe serves Native American food. The Buffalo Nickel Burger is a bison patty on a pretzel bun with Monterey Jack, arugula and cabernet reduction, and the Black Sheep Burger is a beef patty with green chili and chipotle mayo on a nanniskadii bun. Go for a dinner out with adults; the menu runs to Navajo tacos and pozole for anyone who does not want a burger.
Station 22 on Center Street serves two half-pound burgers on brioche. The Jack Kerouac adds brie, bacon, arugula and bourbon sauce, and the All American Cheese Burger is the plainer one, with Swiss and sriracha mayo. Go for brunch or lunch at a table; the rest of the menu is Southern, with fried chicken, biscuits and fried green tomatoes.
Chubby's says it grinds fresh, never frozen Creekstone Black Angus beef in house. The Utah Cheeseburger comes with American cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato and fry sauce, and the Chubby Deluxe doubles the patty and adds bacon and grilled onions. For families, there is a Little Cheeseburger and kids meals of cheeseburger, chicken tenders or mac and cheese.
Cubby's on North State Street grills Certified Angus beef daily. The Dragonslayer is a third-pound patty with bleu cheese crumbles, smoked bacon and homemade creamy buffalo sauce, and Le Squish stacks 2.5-ounce patties with American cheese and secret sauce. Plain Jane, Gypsy and Houdini come in a 2.5-ounce or third-pound patty, and the Black Bean quinoa burger is vegetarian, so a vegetarian can order too.
Sidecar Cafe sits inside Legends Motor Co., and you walk through it to reach the Legends Motorcycle Museum and its early Harleys and Indians. The Shovelhead BBQ Burger is a third-pound brisket steak burger with cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce and a crispy onion ring. For a family with a motorcycle fan, lunch and the museum fit in one stop.
CHOM, Backdoor BRGR, Black Sheep Cafe and Station 22 are all downtown, between 300 North and Center Street, so you can walk to the next one if the first has a wait.
Black Sheep Cafe, Station 22 and Backdoor BRGR take reservations through their sites. For the rest, order at the shop or online.
If you are choosing by patty, CHOM's burgers are quarter-pound patties, as is the Burgers Supreme Pastrami Burger. JCW's burgers and the Sidecar Cafe Shovelhead are third-pound, and the Station 22 burgers and the Backdoor BRGR Dan Kelly are half a pound. Cubby's lets you pick a 2.5-ounce or third-pound patty on several burgers, and Provo Burger lets you pick one, two or three wagyu patties.
South of Provo, Springville has Sidecar Cafe at 1715 W 500 S and a Chubby's at 694 W 400 S, Spanish Fork has a Cubby's at 515 E 1000 N, and Payson has a Chubby's at 855 Turf Farm Road, Unit B.
