American Fork sits at the foot of Mount Timpanogos. Pioneers settled it in 1850 as Lake City, and in 1860 it took the name of the American Fork River that runs through town. Its summer celebration is still called Steel Days, after the Geneva steel mill that closed in 2001. Most visitors come for American Fork Canyon, which holds Tibble Fork Reservoir, the Alpine Loop and Timpanogos Cave National Monument.
