Fiesta Days rodeo week, the lavender fields' last stand, and Saturday peaches at Pioneer Park

Plus farm ice cream in Santaquin, a free Gordon Parks photo show, and a heads up before you swim Utah Lake this weekend.

Good morning, Happy Valley.

The south end owns this one. Spanish Fork rolls into its biggest week of the year with the Fiesta Days rodeo starting Monday, the lavender fields in Mona are in their final days of bloom, and Santaquin has the farm ice cream waiting on the drive home. One heads up before anyone packs swimsuits for Utah Lake, down in the news.

Fiesta Days week arrives in Spanish Fork

Spanish Fork's biggest week of the year is here: the 84th annual Fiesta Days Rodeo runs five straight nights, Monday July 20 through Friday July 24, at the fairgrounds on Main Street.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Rodeo Mon Jul 20 to Fri Jul 24 ยท gates 6pm, preshow 7pm, rodeo 7:30pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, 475 S Main St, Spanish Fork ยท ~15 min from downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $11 to $23.50
โฐTiming: This weekend is when you sort tickets and pick your night: Tuesday is Patriot Night and Thursday is Tough Enough To Wear Pink Night. Seats run $11 to $23.50 on sfcitytix.com, and the good sections go before rodeo week starts.
Our take
Eighty-four years in, this is still the real thing: bareback, saddle bronc, barrel racing, and bull riding under the July sky with the whole south county in the stands. Tickets top out at $23.50, less than a movie night for three. We would pick Tuesday: Patriot Night, the flags come out, and the crowd sings. If your kids have never seen a bull rider live, this is the week to fix that.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Friday night goes first every year. Buy at sfcitytix.com this weekend rather than gambling on the gate Monday.

Health officials flag algae blooms before lake weekend plans

The Utah County Health Department issued a harmful algal bloom warning this week for Lincoln Marina Beach and the Saratoga Springs Marina picnic area on Utah Lake. Under the warning you should not swim, wade, or let dogs in the water at those spots, and kids are the most at risk since they are the most likely to swallow lake water. Fishing is still allowed if you discard the skin and guts, and boating is not affected. With a hot weekend ahead, know before you load up the paddleboards.

BYU's medical school is one decision away from recruiting its first class

Accreditors made their site visit to BYU's School of Medicine in June, and a decision on preliminary accreditation is expected this fall. If it lands, the school starts recruiting a founding class of 60 students for fall 2027. The building rises on West Campus, the old Provo High site near Utah Valley Hospital, which puts a full medical school in the middle of Provo. For the county that means research money, physician pipelines, and a lot of construction around west downtown.

๐Ÿฅ• Provo Farmers Market at Pioneer Park

The Saturday market on Center Street with local produce, food vendors, and makers, running every week through October.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Jul 18 ยท 9am to 2pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Pioneer Park, 500 W Center St, Provo ยท ~3 min from downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free entry
โฐTiming: Mid-July is when the fruit gets serious, so go early for the best peaches and bring cash for the smaller stands.
Our take
Two hundred-plus vendors rotate through, and mid-July is when the stone fruit gets serious. Coffee, a slow lap, a bag of peaches you will finish before Monday, kids loose on the park. The grocery store cannot compete this month.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The good fruit sells down by late morning. 9am you pick from everything; 1pm you pick from what is left.

๐Ÿ’œ Last days of lavender at the Mona farm

The Young Living lavender farm below Mount Nebo blooms from late June through the first half of July, which makes this weekend the tail end of the purple. The visitor center runs farm activities alongside the fields.
๐Ÿ•Hours: This weekend ยท bloom season ends mid-July
๐Ÿ“Address: 3700 N Highway 91, Mona ยท ~35 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Fields free to visit ยท some activities priced separately
โฐTiming: Go in the morning for cooler air and better photos, and bring water; the fields sit in full sun.
Our take
Acres of purple against the Nebo foothills, 35 minutes from your driveway. Take the photos everyone will assume came from a trip abroad. Wait a week and it is green stubble until next June.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Bloom timing shifts with the weather and activity schedules vary, so confirm hours and what is open at the farm before the drive.

๐Ÿ“ธ Gordon Parks photographs at the BYU Museum of Art

A new exhibition of photographs by Gordon Parks, the pioneering Life magazine photographer and filmmaker, opened this month and runs into November. The museum is free.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Open now through Nov 21 ยท Mon to Sat 10am to 6pm, Fri until 9pm
๐Ÿ“Address: BYU Museum of Art, Provo ยท ~5 min from downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: Friday evening hours make it a free, air-conditioned date stop before dinner downtown.
Our take
Parks shot some of the most important American photographs of the last century, and a show of this caliber landing free in Provo is not a small thing. Take the teenagers. This is history told through a camera, and Friday it hangs until 9pm.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Closed Sundays. The quiet window is Friday evening, when campus empties out.

Ride the Outlaw Express up to Mandan and on toward the Bearclaw summit views, no hiking required, running daily all summer up Provo Canyon.

๐Ÿ“Address: Sundance Mountain Resort, Provo Canyon ยท ~25 min from downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $30 adult ยท $27 child and senior ยท 5 and under free
โฐTiming: Twilight runs Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat until 9pm.
Our take
The fastest ten-degree drop in the county, and nobody has to earn it with a hike. Twilight rides are the July move: cooler air, the valley glowing on the way down.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Afternoon monsoon cells pause the lifts. A stormy-sky day is a morning-ride day.

Rowley's Red Barn, Santaquin

The farm store and creamery at the Rowley family's fruit farm off the Santaquin exit, scooping ice cream made on site alongside the orchard's own fruit and goods.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon to Sat 9am to 9pm ยท closed Sunday
๐Ÿ“Address: 901 S 300 W, Santaquin ยท ~25 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $
โฐTiming: Stack it onto the Mona lavender drive; the barn sits right on the way home.
Our take
Order the cherry cheesecake ice cream and thank the tart cherry orchards it came from. A summer evening cone on the drive back from Mona is about as Utah County as it gets. Grab a bag of dried cherries on the way out.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Closed Sundays, and the line runs long on hot Saturday evenings.

๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: Morning or evening beats the mid-afternoon heat since the big structures sit in full sun.
Our take
Designed with input from local kids and built by volunteers, and it shows in how much there is to climb. Pair it with a library stop across the park and a free morning becomes a full outing.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: It is popular, so weekends get busy by mid-morning. Bring water; shade over the play structures is limited.

Geneva Road widening grinds through its big year

The long Geneva Road rebuild is in its heaviest stretch, adding a second lane each way plus a center turn lane, bike lanes, and a multi-use path from University Parkway down toward 1450 South through Orem and Vineyard. Lane shifts have been in place since last fall, the widening runs through late 2026, and the sidewalk-and-path work lands in the fall. If you cut through there for a lake run or a north-end errand this weekend, build in the extra minutes.

Utah County keeps setting the state growth pace

The state first-ever city-by-city population estimates put Utah County at the front of the line. Saratoga Springs added more residents than any other Utah city last year, up 8.4 percent, with Eagle Mountain right behind and Spanish Fork in the top five statewide. Half of the ten fastest-growing communities in Utah sit in this county. It is the number under everything else you feel here: the traffic, the new schools, the rooftops climbing the benches.
