Steel Days week in American Fork, a viral a cappella group at the Shell, and New York pizza lands in Vineyard

Plus Midland at Sundance on Saturday, Prince of Egypt's final weekend in Spanish Fork, and a hidden waterfall up Payson Canyon.

Good morning, Happy Valley.

Two hometown celebrations own the same week this year. American Fork throws its 86th Steel Days up north, a full week of car shows, carnival, and Saturday fireworks, while Spanish Fork's Fiesta Days rodeo kicks up dust every night down south. In between there's a viral a cappella group at the SCERA Shell tonight, New York pizza that finally earns the hype in Vineyard, and a hidden waterfall most of the valley drives right past.

Steel Days week takes over American Fork Worth it

Steel Days week takes over American Fork

American Fork's biggest week of the summer is on, and 2026 marks the 86th Steel Days. It runs all week and builds to Saturday, July 25: the Grand Parade steps off at 9:30am, the Smoke and Steel cookoff and the carnival fill Mary and Art Dye Park all day, and fireworks close it out after dark.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Through Sat, Jul 25 ยท main day Saturday (parade 9:30am, fireworks after dark)
๐Ÿ“Address: Steel Days events across American Fork ยท fair and concerts at Mary and Art Dye Park, 550 N 500 E ยท ~20 min north of downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Mostly free ยท some events ticketed
โฐTiming: New for the 86th year is a beach party and marina day down at the American Fork boat harbor, so this is the rare Steel Days with a lake option baked in. If you only pick one day, pick Saturday: parade, cookoff, carnival, and fireworks all stack into it.
Our take
Eighty-six years running, and American Fork still throws the kind of week where the whole town shows up: a car cruise and burnout contest opening weekend, a nightly fair, and a Saturday that starts with a marching-band breakfast and ends with fireworks. It is free at the core, which makes it the easy call for a family night that does not cost a paycheck. Down south Spanish Fork counters with the Fiesta Days rodeo, so the valley is basically running two block parties at once.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The Saturday parade packs Main Street by 9am. Stake a curb spot early or park a few blocks off and walk in rather than fighting for a close space.

Eagle Mountain's newest elementary opens its doors next month

Juniper Basin Elementary in Eagle Mountain is set to welcome students on the first day of school in August, and it opens close to full. The K-6 school is projected to top 800 students in year one, a number driven by the run of new families filling Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs. It is one of the first schools built under the new Lake Mountain School District, carved out of Alpine as the west side of the county keeps outgrowing its classrooms.

Vineyard's lakefront city starts to feel like a city

Utah City, the 700-acre development rising on Utah Lake's east shore in Vineyard, is filling in fast this summer. Its first restaurants and a cafe are open, a new community park and play area now draw families, and the project is wiring in the state's first geothermal heating and cooling utility. A second Huntsman cancer center is also under construction on the site. For the county's fastest-growing corner, this is the moment the master plan stops being renderings and starts being a place you actually drive to.

Pick of the week

๐ŸŽค Kings Return, the viral a cappella group, at the SCERA Shell

Kings Return, the four-man vocal group who blew up posting bare-bones stairwell performances, plays the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre in Orem tonight. Their sound runs from gospel and R&B to jazz and pop, all of it built on close harmony and no instruments.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon, Jul 20 ยท 8pm (gates 6:30)
๐Ÿ“Address: SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre, Orem ยท ~10 min north of downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $25 to $45
โฐTiming: Reserved seats get you close, but a blanket on the lawn is the SCERA Shell tradition and the cheaper move. Either way, get there near the 6:30 gate for the good grass.
Our take
Four guys, no band, and a sound big enough to fill an outdoor amphitheater under the July sky. This is the kind of act that goes viral for a reason, and catching it live on a summer night for the price of a movie ticket is a genuine deal. Take anyone who thinks a cappella means a college novelty; these voices will fix that in one song.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The lawn is general admission unless you buy reserved, and the close-in spots fill by the time gates open at 6:30.

๐Ÿฅ• Springville Sunset Farmers Market

Springville runs its farmers market on Monday evenings, not the usual Saturday morning, with more than a hundred local vendors and live musicians playing while you shop. It runs weekly through late October.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon, Jul 20 ยท evening (weekly through Oct 26)
๐Ÿ“Address: Historic downtown Springville ยท ~10 min south of downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free entry
โฐTiming: Because it is a sunset market, the play is to roll in after the heat breaks, grab dinner off a food stand, and let the live music carry the evening while the kids run the lawn.
Our take
Most farmers markets make you set an alarm. This one waits for the cool of the evening, which is the smarter design in a July that has been baking. A hundred-plus small businesses, produce coming into its mid-summer best, and someone playing music in the background: that is a Monday night out disguised as an errand.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: It is Monday evenings only, not the Saturday you might be used to, and the produce stands thin out as the light goes.

๐ŸŽญ The Prince of Egypt at Spanish Fork Community Theater

Spanish Fork Community Theater's big summer musical, The Prince of Egypt, plays its final weekend at Spanish Fork High School. Stephen Schwartz, of Wicked, wrote the score, which is why 'When You Believe' lands the way it does live.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Final shows Fri, Jul 24 ยท 7pm and Sat, Jul 25 ยท 2pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Spanish Fork High School Auditorium, 158 N 630 W, Spanish Fork ยท ~15 min south of downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $6 to $10
โฐTiming: The Saturday 2pm matinee is the easiest one to bring younger kids to, and tickets top out at $10, so a family of five sees a full musical for less than a fast-food run.
Our take
Community theater gets sold short until a cast this size fills a high school stage with the Red Sea and a Schwartz score. For six to ten bucks a seat, it is one of the better cheap nights in the south end of the county. Only three performances left, and the ones with a big finale like this tend to fill on the closing weekend.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Only three shows remain, and doors sell tickets 30 minutes before curtain, so the last-minute plan is a gamble on a closing weekend.

๐ŸŽธ Midland at the Sundance amphitheater

Country band Midland, the 'Drinkin' Problem' crew, plays Sundance Mountain Resort's outdoor amphitheater up Provo Canyon on Saturday night. It is the resort's marquee summer concert, in a canyon setting that does most of the work.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Jul 25 ยท 8pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Sundance Mountain Resort Amphitheater, Provo Canyon ยท ~25 min up Provo Canyon
๐Ÿ’ตCost: From about $159
โฐTiming: Buy through the Sundance box office rather than the resale sites. Face value starts around $159, and the amphitheater is small enough that there is not really a bad seat.
Our take
A national country act in a canyon amphitheater that holds a few thousand, ten degrees cooler than the valley floor, with the mountains going pink behind the stage. That combination does not come around often up here. It is the splurge on this week's list, but it is the kind of night people describe for years.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Face value starts near $159 through Sundance, while the resale sites are already asking triple, so buy from the resort and skip the markup.

Fini Pizza, Utah City in Vineyard Worth it

Fini Pizza, Utah City in Vineyard

Fini Pizza, a New York slice shop that made its name back East, opened its first location outside New York in Utah City this spring, the development's first restaurant. Big foldable slices, a Fini Cafe next door for espresso, and a walk-up counter on the lakefront.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Open daily ยท lunch and dinner
๐Ÿ“Address: Fini Pizza, Utah City, Vineyard ยท ~12 min from downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $
โฐTiming: Order a plain cheese slice first to judge the place the way New Yorkers do, then go back for pepperoni. The Fini Cafe next door pours the espresso if you want to make an evening of it.
Our take
Brooklyn sent its slice shop west, and Vineyard has not stopped talking since. This is real New York-style pizza, the thin, wide, fold-it kind that Utah usually only fakes, and it landed on the new Utah City lakefront where you can eat it looking at the water. Sold out of dough within days of opening, which tells you the town already agrees.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: They ran out of dough within days of opening and still sell out on busy nights, so go early or call before a late run.

Grotto Falls, up Payson Canyon

Everyone knows Bridal Veil. Almost nobody makes the turn up Payson Canyon for Grotto Falls, a short walk off the Nebo Loop that ends at a waterfall tucked into a natural amphitheater of rock. The trail runs about half a mile and stays mostly flat.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Daylight hours ยท mornings best in monsoon season
๐Ÿ“Address: Grotto Falls Trailhead, Nebo Loop Road, Payson Canyon ยท ~35 min south of downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: The half-mile, mostly-flat trail makes this the rare waterfall payoff that works with little kids and grandparents both, and the Nebo Loop drive to the trailhead is a scenic byway in its own right.
Our take
It is the kind of place people screenshot and ask where it is: a waterfall spilling into a curved rock grotto at the end of an easy trail, cooler and greener than the valley you left. Fifteen minutes of walking for a full canyon reward, which is a better trade than most hikes offer.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Afternoon monsoon cells can turn the canyon creek fast this time of year, so go in the morning and skip it entirely if storms are in the forecast.

Lehi's 2100 North project inches toward a new I-15 connection

Crews are pushing on Lehi's 2100 North project, the roadwork meant to open up east-west travel across northwest Utah County and tie I-15 to the Mountain View Corridor. The build has brought overnight I-15 lane and full closures near 2100 North for utility work, timed for the small hours to keep daytime traffic moving. When it is finished it gives the fast-growing north end another way across the freeway. Until then, budget extra minutes if you cut through Lehi late at night.

State Street widens to seven lanes between Pleasant Grove and American Fork

The stretch of State Street and 500 East from 220 South in Pleasant Grove up to 500 East in American Fork is being widened to seven lanes, one of several north-county projects trying to catch the roads up to the growth. Expect lane shifts and slower going through the corridor while crews work. It is the kind of steady, unglamorous roadwork that shows up on your commute long before anyone cuts a ribbon.

The restored Provo River delta wraps its next round of upgrades

The Provo River Delta Restoration Project, the four-year effort that reshaped where the river meets Utah Lake, is finishing a fresh round of public amenities this summer: three fishing platforms and two non-motorized boat ramps along the Old Provo Channel. Once the ramps and piers wrap around mid-summer, Utah County plans to pave the Provo River Parkway from Lakeshore Drive out to Utah Lake State Park. The delta was rebuilt to save the native June sucker, and the fish are spawning again up the lower Provo River, a sign the restoration is taking hold.
