Plus No. 4 Pitt at Smith Fieldhouse, Sunday mall hours in Orem, and an RSL home date with Son Heung-min.
Good morning, Happy Valley.
Payson owns the first half of this week. FROZEN plays tonight at Payson High, then Golden Onion Days starts Thursday with a free Aaron Watson concert at Peteetneet.
Provo takes over Friday and Saturday with Festival Latinoamericano, No. 4 Pittsburgh at Smith Fieldhouse, and BYU football's season opener. Here is what is worth the drive, what needs a ticket, and what is easier to watch from home.

โญ The Big One
Pick of the week Aaron Watson opens Golden Onion Days at Peteetneet
Payson starts Golden Onion Days Thursday with a free Aaron Watson concert at the Peteetneet Outdoor Amphitheater. The city dates the festival from September 3 through 7 and traces it to the 1929 Onion Harvest and Homecoming, when Payson's onion farms were the reason for the party. Watson's tour page lists the show at 6pm, free, and open to all ages.
Our take
This is the right opening night. You get the festival's history, a touring country singer, and no gate price in one stop.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The concert is outdoors. Check Payson City's event page for weather or schedule changes before leaving.

University Place is now open from noon to 6 on Sundays
University Place began Sunday hours this month, the first time the Orem shopping center has opened on Sundays. The center now lists noon to 6pm for Sunday, compared with 10am to 9pm Monday through Saturday. Individual stores and restaurants can keep different hours, so check the tenant page before making a one-store trip.
Provo Airport opened its snow-removal equipment facility
Utah County announced the opening of Provo Airport's snow-removal equipment facility on August 19. The building gives the airport a dedicated place for the machines used to clear the airfield in winter. Federal Aviation Administration grant records list construction and expansion of the facility across three funding years, so this opening closes out a multi-year airport project rather than a last-minute shed build.

MONDAY
Book now FROZEN plays tonight at Payson High
Payson Community Theater brings the Broadway version of FROZEN to the high school auditorium tonight. This is the full stage musical, not a screening. Performances continue Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm, with a 2pm Saturday matinee and a 3pm Labor Day finale.
Our take
Book it if a child in your house still sings the movie. The local cast and full Broadway score make this more than a quick school-night show.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Use the east-side school entrance for the auditorium and buy through the theater's current ticket page.

Worth it Wren Ross talks through her mixed-media work at UVU's museum
Artist Wren Ross gives a one-hour talk Tuesday evening in the Basement Theater at the UVU Museum of Art at Lakemount. The museum lists light refreshments, free admission, and Tuesday hours from 1 to 8pm, so there is time to see the galleries before the talk starts.
Our take
Worth the hour if you want the artist's decisions behind the work instead of another silent gallery lap.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The talk is in the Basement Theater, not on UVU's main campus.

FRIDAY
Worth it Festival Latinoamericano starts four free days downtown
Festival Latinoamericano returns to the Utah County Historic Courthouse grounds Friday through Labor Day. Friday's main-stage program starts at 5:45pm and runs through 11:30pm with music, dance, an opening ceremony, and a closing DJ set. Admission is free, and the organizer's 2026 map places food and craft vendors around the courthouse lawn.
Our take
Go for dinner and stay for the stage. This is a real four-day cultural festival, not three booths added to another event.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The 2026 venue is the Historic Courthouse lawn. Older listings that place it at Library Park are wrong.

FRIDAY
Book now No. 24 BYU volleyball gets No. 4 Pittsburgh at home
BYU opens its home schedule Thursday against Eastern Illinois, then gets the sharper test Friday against No. 4 Pittsburgh. Pitt reached the 2025 Final Four, while BYU arrives 2-0 after beating Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers. Friday's match is at 6:30pm on ESPN+.
Our take
This is the better BYU ticket of the weekend. A top-five volleyball match gives you more competitive tension per dollar than the football opener.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Thursday's Eastern Illinois match is a separate ticket and also starts at 6:30pm.

SATURDAY
Skip unless BYU football opens the season against Utah Tech
BYU starts its 2026 football season at home against Utah Tech, an FCS program that went 2-10 last year. Kickoff is 6pm at LaVell Edwards Stadium, and ESPN+ carries the game. BYU won the schools' only previous meeting 52-26 in 2022.
Our take
Skip the ticket unless you want to be inside the stadium for the first game. Utah Tech won two games last season, and ESPN+ is the practical way to see this one before Arizona visits next week.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The broadcast is on ESPN+, not a listed over-the-air or cable channel.

RSL lost without a shot on goal, and Son Heung-min comes Saturday
Real Salt Lake lost 1-0 at Colorado on Saturday and did not put a shot on target. RSL has now lost four straight in all competitions and gone eight MLS matches without a win. The club comes home Saturday for LAFC and Son Heung-min, with Morgan Guilavogui suspended for yellow-card accumulation.
No. 24 BYU went 2-0 in Florida before two home matches
BYU came back from two sets down to beat Florida State 3-2 Friday, then beat host Florida Gulf Coast 3-1 Saturday. The Cougars are 2-0 under Rob Neilson and return to Smith Fieldhouse for Eastern Illinois Thursday and No. 4 Pittsburgh Friday.
๐ด Eat & Drink
Worth it Purple Turtle, Pleasant Grove
The purple drive-in on State Road has served burgers, onion rings, shakes, and sherbet from the same Pleasant Grove location since 1968. This week's rotating sherbet is orange and marshmallow. The kitchen makes orders as they come, and the menu still leans into the old drive-in combination of a burger, fried side, and something cold.
Our take
Go for the onion rings and the weekly sherbet twist. The orange-marshmallow run gives you a reason to stop this week instead of any week.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Food is made to order, so the line can move slower than a standard drive-through. Closed Sundays.

Worth it Bilingual Storytime at American Fork Library
American Fork Library runs a half-hour storytime in English and Spanish for children and their caregivers Thursday morning. The program mixes stories, music, and simple activities in the Children's Activity Room. It is short enough for preschool attention spans and does not require a full afternoon.
Our take
A useful free half-hour for families who speak Spanish, are learning it, or want their kids to hear both languages in the same room.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: This session is for children with a parent or caregiver, not a drop-off program.

Bank of Utah opened its Lehi branch with a ribbon cutting on August 25. The location at 2292 1930 N Street is the bank's fifth in Utah County, after Lindon, Orem, Provo, and the Spanish Fork branch that opened in July. The new lobby and drive-through list weekday hours from 9am to 5:30pm.
UVU closed the Lehi parking garage for concrete repairs
Concrete repairs started August 24 in the parking garage on the east side of Building 1 at UVU's Lehi campus. UVU says the garage will stay closed for about eight weeks and directs staff and visitors to the surface lots. That puts the current estimate around late October, though the university has not posted a fixed reopening date.

Festival Latinoamericano still needs volunteers downtown
The four-day festival is built by volunteers. People 14 and older can take a shift on their own, and ages 12 to 13 can help with a parent or guardian. The organizer provides an orientation, water, and a snack, and volunteers who work at least two hours receive a festival shirt.
Choose a volunteer shift โ That is the week. Start in Payson tonight or Thursday, save Friday for Festival Latinoamericano or Pitt volleyball, and stream the football opener Saturday unless you want the stadium night.
