Saturday's market in Provo is where you find out what the April freeze actually did, Alpine hands out five free days before its parade and fireworks, and Peter Breinholt takes the canyon amphitheater the same night

Plus a Spanish Fork drive-in that has been dressing burgers in the same white sauce since the fifties, a working Gutenberg press in Alpine that sends you home holding something you watched come off the bed, and the Bees ending an eleven-game slide by a single run.

Good morning, Happy Valley.

School goes back a week from tomorrow, which makes this the last full week of summer anybody is getting. Alpine is running the only city celebration left on the calendar, and the markets have reached the point in August where the tables turn over to stone fruit. That turnover is the story this year rather than a footnote.

โญ The Big One

Saturday's market in Provo is where you find out what the April freeze actually did Pick of the week

Saturday's market in Provo is where you find out what the April freeze actually did

The Provo Farmers Market sets up Saturdays from 9 to 2 in Pioneer Park at 500 West Center, and holds that window through September 26 before the hours shorten for the last month of the season. Mid-August is normally the best morning of the year to be standing in it, when the tables go over to peaches, corn, tomatoes and melons off farms close enough to drive to. The fruit half of that came in thin. Utah went through its warmest winter in 131 years, blossoms opened three to four weeks ahead of schedule, and April then dropped into the low twenties and caught them wide open. Wall Brothers The Barn, a family operation out near Utah Lake, went from twelve to fifteen peach varieties down to two. Its cherry season lasted about four days where a normal one runs three and a half weeks. What survived did so almost entirely on geography, which orchard happened to sit where when the cold settled in. Some growers still have fruit to sell. Others have nothing at all this year, and the ones setting up at markets this month are the reason the difference is worth noticing before the season closes out.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Aug 15 ยท 9am to 2pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Pioneer Park, 500 W Center St, Provo ยท Downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free to walk in
โฐTiming: Stone fruit is the first thing gone on an ordinary Saturday, and this is not an ordinary Saturday. Nine to about ten is the window where the peach tables still give you a choice.
Our take
Grocery fruit is not required to tell you where it grew, and this year the gap between a Utah peach and a trucked-in one is wider than it has been in a long time. At Pioneer Park the person who grew it is standing behind the box, so the answer costs you one sentence. Go early, buy more than you planned to, and freeze whatever you cannot get through by Wednesday.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The park lot fills by about half past nine and the overflow is street parking along Center, so the walk back carrying a full box is part of the morning.

FrontRunner's double-tracking cleared its next federal gate on Friday

The Federal Transit Administration moved the FrontRunner 2X project into the Engineering phase of its Capital Investment Grants program on August 7, the step that comes before a full funding agreement. The agency anticipates a $1.28 billion federal commitment once the financial, technical and legal requirements are settled. The work adds 26.1 miles of double track across eleven stretches of the 89-mile Ogden to Provo corridor, plus a new station, ten trainsets and a maintenance facility. Two of the segments now in design sit between the Vineyard, Provo and Orem stations, which is the piece that decides whether the goal of a train every 15 minutes ever reaches this end of the line.

Utah has burned more forest and woodland this year than in any year on record

University of Utah geographers put the 2026 figure at roughly 285,000 acres of woodland and forest, about 445 square miles, which clears the previous record by a wide margin. Across all vegetation types the state has burned more than 474,000 acres this year, still under the 2007 mark for total acreage. Three fires each topped 60,000 acres, led by the Cottonwood fire at about 97,000 acres across the Tushar Range, which took more than 150 structures with it near Eagle Point. The number that lands hardest is the pace: 27 percent of all the Utah forest lost to fire since 1986 has burned in the last three years.

๐ŸŽก Alpine hands out five straight days before it charges for anything

Alpine Days runs through Saturday the 15th, and the weekday half is the part nobody drives up for. Tuesday puts tots in the park at Burgess from 9:30, a home run derby at five, and stargazing at Lambert Park from 9:15 to eleven. Wednesday has a pet show at ten, chalk going down at Creekside from six at five dollars an entry, and a movie in the park at nine. Thursday opens with yoga at eight and kids activities at Burgess from ten, then the rodeo starts the first of its three nights at 7:30. Friday the carnival opens at noon at Creekside, the parade rolls down Main at nine on Saturday morning, and fireworks close the whole thing at ten that night.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Through Sat, Aug 15
๐Ÿ“Address: Creekside, Burgess and Lambert parks, Alpine ยท ~30 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Most of the week is free; carnival wristband $35 ahead, $40 on site
โฐTiming: Friday from noon to four is the carnival's early bird window, when every ride takes a single ticket. After four the same rides want a wristband, which runs thirty five dollars bought ahead and forty at the gate.
Our take
Everything from Monday through Thursday is free or close to it, and almost none of it pulls anybody who does not already live up there. Stargazing at Lambert Park on a Tuesday night is the whole argument: dark sky, no admission, a town of ten thousand between you and the ridge. The rodeo is the piece that sells, and it had already lost two of its three nights before the week started.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Every site other than the city's own that turns up selling seats to that rodeo is a resale operation charging resale prices.

๐ŸŽธ Peter Breinholt and Big Parade take the canyon amphitheater Saturday

Doors open at seven and the set starts at eight on Saturday the 15th at the Outdoor Amphitheater at Sundance. Breinholt has been making records with Big Parade since the nineties and is seven albums deep with them now. Seating splits between benches and lawn, with the lawn sold as general admission. Tickets go through Sundance.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Sat, Aug 15 ยท doors 7pm, show 8pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Outdoor Amphitheater, Sundance Mountain Resort, Provo Canyon ยท ~25 min up Provo Canyon
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Ticketed through Sundance
โฐTiming: Sundance asks people to be on the property thirty to forty five minutes before they want to be seated, and to leave another half hour on top of that for parking and the shuttle down from the upper lot. An eight o'clock show is a six thirty arrival.
Our take
We put this one at the bottom of Friday's issue and it deserves better than that. This catalog was written for the night it is about to get, outdoors and up a canyon and after the light goes. Lawn is first come, which means the good grass belongs to whoever walked up the hill early rather than whoever paid the most. Put a jacket in the car even if the valley floor is still sitting at ninety when you pull out of the driveway.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Outside food and drink do not come onto the property. Sealed water and empty clear bottles are the exceptions, and dinner is a barbecue you buy there ahead of the show.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Provo's Spanish-language community night fills the library ballroom tonight

Tu Voz Importa runs its third year on Monday the 10th in the ballroom at the Provo City Library. Partner booths and food open at six, the program starts at 6:30 with cultural performances, and an open question session with city leaders sits in the middle of it. The whole evening runs in Spanish with English translation.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon, Aug 10 ยท booths 6pm, program 6:30pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Provo City Library Ballroom, 550 N University Ave, Provo ยท Downtown Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: The half hour before the program starts is the part worth showing up for. That is when the resource booths and the food are open and nobody is on a microphone yet.
Our take
About 19 percent of Provo identifies as Latino and roughly 18 percent of households here speak Spanish at home, which is a big enough share of a small city that a night like this reads as overdue rather than symbolic. Bring somebody who has been meaning to ask the city something and has never had the right room to do it in.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The ballroom sits inside the old academy building, so give yourself a couple of minutes to find it once you are through the doors.

๐ŸŽถ Tonight is the last free Monday before the school year starts

Concerts in the Park runs Monday nights at the American Fork Amphitheater, put on by the Harrington Center for the Arts. Food trucks open at 6:30 and the music starts at seven. The season finishes on the 17th, and Nebo goes back to school on the 18th with Alpine following on the 19th, so tonight is the last one that lands on a night with no bedtime attached to it.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Mon, Aug 10 ยท trucks 6:30pm, music 7pm
๐Ÿ“Address: American Fork Amphitheater, American Fork ยท ~20 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free
โฐTiming: That half hour between the trucks opening and the first song is the design of the whole thing. Eat at 6:30, then take the lawn at ten to seven while there is still lawn to take.
Our take
A free concert with dinner already parked beside it is about as low as the bar gets for a weeknight, and next Monday the same lawn belongs to families who have to have kids in bed. Tonight nobody does. That is the difference between the two dates left on this series.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Seating is whatever came out of your trunk, so a blanket or a camp chair is not optional here.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ The Springville museum stays open to nine on Wednesdays and runs a short tour at seven

The Springville Museum of Art holds late hours every Wednesday, ten in the morning through nine at night, and gives a fifteen-minute introduction to the collection at seven. Admission is free every day the doors are open. The collection traces back to 1903, when Cyrus Dallin and John Hafen handed paintings to the local high school and the town kept adding to them from there.
๐Ÿ•Hours: Wed, Aug 12 ยท tour at 7pm, galleries open to 9pm
๐Ÿ“Address: Springville Museum of Art, 126 E 400 S, Springville ยท ~12 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: Free, donations accepted
โฐTiming: Fifteen minutes is the tour, not the visit. Take the seven o'clock walk-through for the orientation and then use the two hours behind it, when there is almost nobody else in the building.
Our take
Wednesday is the only night all week the galleries stay open past five, which turns a place most people file under weekend errand into a weeknight one instead. A free hour in a quiet building beats most of what an August Wednesday otherwise puts in front of you.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Tuesday through Saturday it shuts at five and Sunday it opens for three hours in the afternoon, so a weeknight visit has exactly one date on it.

Glade's Drive Inn, Spanish Fork

Glade's sits at 296 South Main in a building that went up in 1878 as a house and a hotel. Glade Schwartz bought it in 1952 and had it running as a drive-in by 1954, and the window has been turning out burgers, hand-dipped pronto pups and halibut fish and chips ever since. Weekday hours run ten to ten, and Friday it stays open until eleven.

๐Ÿ“Address: 296 S Main St, Spanish Fork ยท ~15 min south of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $
โฐTiming: Ten at night on a weekday is late for that stretch of Main, which makes this the fallback when a ball game or a shift runs past the hour everything else locked up.
Our take
Order the Super Cheese and ask for extra white sauce for the fries. That sauce is the entire reason people who left Spanish Fork two decades ago still pull off the highway on the way through, and no amount of describing it does the work that one paper cup of it does.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: The white sauce goes on the burger by default, so say something at the window if that is not what you are after.

There is a working Gutenberg press in Alpine, and you leave holding something it printed

The Crandall Historical Printing Museum sits at 65 West Main Street Court in Alpine, and it is rooms of working machines rather than glass cases. One is a replica of Gutenberg's press, where type gets cast in front of you and a page of the 42-line Bible comes off the bed. One is Benjamin Franklin's printing house, where a Declaration of Independence gets printed during the tour and the copy goes home with you. The third is the Grandin shop, where the first Book of Mormon was set. Tours run about an hour and the museum works by appointment.
๐Ÿ•Hours: By appointment ยท tours run about an hour
๐Ÿ“Address: 65 W Main Street Ct, Alpine ยท ~30 min north of Provo
๐Ÿ’ตCost: $8 adults, $5 students and seniors, $3 for kids 4 to 15
โฐTiming: Appointment only is not a formality here. Nobody is sitting at a desk waiting on walk-ups, so the booking has to happen before the drive rather than after it.
Our take
Half the county is already driving that road this week for Alpine Days, which makes it the one stretch of the year the trip justifies itself twice over. Kids who have never watched a page get inked stand there far longer than anybody expects, and the Franklin room hands them a piece of paper they saw come off a press. Eight dollars.
โš ๏ธ Heads up: Missionaries and kids under three get in free, groups of fifteen or more pay a flat seventy five, and the whole thing routes through the booking system rather than a front counter.

Utah's fruit harvest came in a fraction of normal, and growers want people asking where theirs came from

The warmest winter in 131 years pushed blossoms open three to four weeks early across apricots, cherries, plums, peaches, pears and apples, and freezes in early and mid April then caught them at their most exposed. Weather stations in the affected areas logged temperatures under 26 degrees for more than eight hours at a stretch. Losses ran between 95 and 100 percent for many growers, and which orchards came through came down almost entirely to where they happened to sit. Matt Hargreaves of the Utah Farm Bureau summed the year up in a sentence: for many of the farmers, they lost everything.

A Morgan County fire pushed evacuations into East Canyon over the weekend

The Rocky Canyon Fire started Friday about thirty miles northeast of Salt Lake City and was mapped at 2,800 acres by Sunday with no containment, though a perimeter uploaded Sunday morning put it well above four thousand. Residents from Whites Crossing to East Canyon Dam were told to go, and the north end of East Canyon State Park including the Dixie Creek campground and day-use areas cleared out. SR-66 closed along with SR-65 out of Henefer, which together make up the back road plenty of people from down here take to that reservoir. A shelter opened at Morgan High School.

The Kem C. Eagle Mountain came in second at 4,169 and 6.8 percent. Measured on percentage among places over ten thousand people, Mapleton led the state at 10.4 percent with Salem behind it. Half of the ten fastest-growing communities in Utah sit inside this county, which is the pressure sitting underneath every road project and school boundary argument here.
